THE  KNITTING  JOURNEY

ZANE SABULE

Each person and each city has a journey. This is the way how I connected to the city of Genk (through past times - industry of coal mines).

During the talks with other people from Genk, I noticed that people want to forget and move on from the past times Genk has gone through. The city is lacking identity and it feels separated not only culturally but also physically. (meaning it even doesn't have its own city center). People want to see Genk arise again and build it in a way that is not based on the industry but rather culture.

I want to question the city identity through the topic of journey and passing times.

With my work, I want to show how important it is to look back on a journey this city has gone through.

I created a video of knitted gloves traveling a virtual tour through the city of Genk. As our challenge was to adjust to the current global situation, my goal was to visually create relationships between the virtual and real worlds.

COULD THIS BE A PATH TO HOW PEOPLE CAN TRULY FIND THE IDENTITY OF GENK?
