When the three coal mines where installed in Genk this particularly meant work and the initiation of migrant labor, with people immigrating from a lot of countries – amongst others from Italy, Ukraine and Poland. Genk was on a rise – not only economically but also culturally. With the working opportunities in the mines came a high cultural diversity. 

 

While still active, the three mines of Genk constituted the central mainstay of social and public life in the city and set the rhythm of Genk in a figurative as well as a literal daily life sense.

 

Speaking to people in Genk today, the image of a cultural archipelago reappeared in several talks.
