The former coal mine of Winterslag (Genk, BE) is now a cultural centre and an experience-based museum. Through interactive artistic installations, we had the opportunity to hear the sounds of the mine, to listen to the stories of miner's and to be immersed into the miner's daily life in a VR experience.
"A long time ago, plants grew here. Time passed and the elements made them turn into the black gold, now hidden deep beneath the surface."
– Naomi's notebook
"At first, Genk seemed barren and somewhat hostile but then I felt connected to its mining elements: maps, up & down, enclosed setting, the use of towers, sounds, cooler palette & layers as well as tools, uniforms and gear. I felt very inspired by the tension of the four elements (stone, water, fire and air) found in mining."
